If you can't afford a dentist

This page will not make us any money. It exists because a very large number of people search for free dental treatment every month, most of what they find is finance advertising, and the genuine options are worth knowing.

What "free dental implants" advertising means

Almost always: monthly payments. The implant costs the same; it is spread over 12 to 60 months, sometimes at 0% for a short introductory period and interest thereafter. The word "free" refers to the consultation, or to the first month. Read what is being offered before you fill anything in — and note that we cannot see who is advertising to you.

Who gets free NHS dental treatment

Treatment is free in England if, when treatment starts, you are:

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own schemes with different rules. Free NHS dental examinations are available to everyone in Scotland.

If you are not exempt: the NHS bands

BandChargeCovers
Urgent£27.90Emergency care, one course of treatment
Band 1£27.90Examination, diagnosis, X-rays, scale and polish, advice
Band 2£76.60Band 1 plus fillings, root canal, extractions
Band 3£332.10Band 1 and 2 plus crowns, dentures, bridges

England, from 1 April 2026. One charge covers a complete course of treatment, however many appointments. If you need more of the same band within two months, it is usually free.

Band 3 at £332.10 is the number worth holding on to. A crown privately runs £500–£1,200 and dentures £500–£2,500. If you can access NHS treatment, Band 3 is dramatically cheaper than anything on the rest of this site — including Turkey.

The access problem

Over 40% of UK adults cannot register with an NHS dentist. Being entitled to a Band 3 charge is worth nothing if no practice within reach is taking NHS patients. This is the actual reason people end up on a site like this one.

Practices open and close their NHS lists constantly. Ring around rather than relying on online directories, ask to be put on a waiting list, and ask whether they take NHS patients for urgent care even when closed for routine registration — many do.

Genuinely low-cost routes

Dental schools

University dental hospitals treat patients at reduced cost or, for some treatments, free. Work is done by supervised students, which means appointments are long and treatment takes months — but supervision is close and the standard is monitored carefully. Birmingham, Cardiff, Dundee, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London (King's, Barts, Eastman), Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield all run clinics. Waiting lists are long and they select cases by teaching value.

Charitable and outreach services

Dentaid runs mobile clinics for people who cannot access NHS dentistry, including homeless and vulnerable groups. Crisis provides dental care through its centres. Community dental services in most areas treat patients with additional needs who cannot be seen in general practice, usually by referral.

Emergency and urgent care

Call NHS 111. They can direct you to an urgent dental service, and you do not need to be a registered patient. For pain, swelling, bleeding or trauma this is the route — not A&E, which cannot treat teeth, and not waiting.

NHS Low Income Scheme

If you are on a low income but not on a qualifying benefit, the Low Income Scheme (form HC1) can give full or partial help with NHS charges. It is under-claimed, largely because few people know it exists.

What we would not do

When abroad genuinely does make sense

Where NHS treatment is unavailable to you and the work needed is large — multiple implants, full-arch, extensive reconstruction — the difference runs into five figures and travelling becomes rational. For a filling, a check-up or a single extraction, it does not. Prices by country →

NHS charges shown are for England, effective 1 April 2026, and are set by the Department of Health and Social Care. Eligibility rules change; check nhs.uk for the current position before relying on this page.
