Romania is the one nobody writes about
It is an EU member with prices within a few hundred pounds of Albania's, three hours from London, and it barely appears in English-language dental tourism coverage. That combination is unusual enough to be worth explaining.

Why Romania is priced where it is
Romanian implant prices sit roughly £250 below Hungary's and £50 above Albania's. The reason is not lower standards — Romania and Hungary are both EU, both train dentists to the same recognised framework — it is that Romania's dental tourism sector never went through the demand-driven repricing Budapest did.
Hungary has been treating foreign patients for thirty years and has raised prices 40–60% over recent years. Romania started later, markets less, and has not caught up. That gap is the opportunity, and it will not stay open indefinitely.
Where to go
| City | Character | Flight from London |
|---|---|---|
| Bucharest | Largest selection, most clinics used to international patients, best flight connections | 3h15 |
| Cluj-Napoca | University city with a respected medical faculty; smaller sector, often 10–15% cheaper than Bucharest | 3h05 |
| Timișoara | Western Romania, closest to Central Europe, mainly serves German and Austrian patients | 3h00 |
| Constanța | Black Sea coast, seasonal, thinner selection outside summer | 3h20 |
What EU membership gets you here
Romanian dentists qualify under the EU professional recognition framework, which means a Romanian dental degree is recognised across the union on the same footing as a Polish or Spanish one. Clinics are subject to national health inspection, and practitioners appear on the public register of the Colegiul Medicilor Dentiști din România.
For a UK patient post-Brexit this is worth less in enforceable terms than it was — the cross-border healthcare directive no longer covers you the way it covers an EU citizen. But the underlying training standard and the existence of a functioning register are real, and they are the substantive difference between Romania and the non-EU options.
Total cost, including the trip
What it would actually cost you
Treatment plus flights and accommodation for two trips. Implant work needs a second visit 3–6 months later for the final crown.

Midpoint figures. Treatment in Romania ranges £450–£1,000 per tooth depending on clinic and materials. Travel estimates are typical off-peak fares from London, not quotes.
Flights run £50–£160 return and Bucharest hotels are among the cheapest of any dental destination at £35–£70 a night. On travel cost Romania beats Turkey outright, which narrows the treatment-price gap between them considerably.
The honest caveats
- Thinner English-language track record. Fewer published patient accounts than Turkey or Hungary, so there is less to read before you commit. That cuts both ways — less marketing noise, but also less independent signal.
- Smaller clinic selection per city. Bucharest has real depth; Cluj and Timișoara have a handful of clinics oriented to foreign patients rather than dozens.
- Fewer full-arch specialists. For All-on-4 and complex reconstruction, case volume per surgeon is lower than in Istanbul or Budapest. For single implants, crowns and bridges the picture is different.
- Aftercare is the same problem as everywhere. EU membership does not put a dentist in your town. Arrange UK follow-up before you travel.
Romania against the alternatives
| Against | Price | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Albania | +£250 | You pay more, you get EU regulation and a public register |
| Turkey | +£200 | You pay more and get less case volume, but shorter flights and EU standards |
| Poland | −£-50 | Cheaper, but Kraków flights are half the price and the sector is better established |
| Hungary | −£50 | Cheaper for equivalent EU standing; Budapest has thirty years more experience |
The clinics behind these figures
10 clinics, 2 of which publish a full price list. The rest quote after an X-ray, which is the norm across the sector. We take no money from any of them and none paid to be here.
