Does your subsidy survive the trip?

Every comparison of dental prices abroad assumes the reader has no health cover, or is British. Most European patients have some form of subsidy, and whether it follows them across a border — and what it is worth when it gets there — changes the answer completely.

The finding, in one line

Fixed subsidies amplify the case for travelling. Proportional subsidies absorb it. Germany hands you the same money whatever the bill, so a cheaper bill means you keep more. Sweden hands you a share of the bill, so a cheaper bill means a smaller share. Switzerland hands you nothing, so the whole gap is yours.

How this is calculated

The two systems that produce opposite answers

Germany: fixed, so the saving multiplies

The Festzuschuss is befundorientiert — tied to the dental finding, not to the treatment you choose or what it costs. A missing tooth in the back of the mouth attracts the same subsidy whether the bill is €2,260 in Munich or €770 in Kraków.

So the subsidy covers a far larger share of a cheaper bill. That is why Turkey, cheapest on treatment price, is not the cheapest destination for a German with a single missing tooth: it sits outside the EU, the subsidy does not travel there, and Poland wins on the final figure despite costing more to treat.

Sweden: proportional, so the saving evaporates

The högkostnadsskydd reimburses half of costs between 3,000 and 15,000 kronor and 85% of everything above. It is a share of the actual bill, and reimbursement is capped at what you actually paid. Make the bill smaller and the subsidy shrinks with it.

Full mouth63,750 kr24,750 kr39,000 kr85%

On a full mouth the gross gap is around 260,000 kronor — nearly £20,000. The high-cost protection absorbs 85% of it, and two trips of flights and hotels take a bite out of what remains. The saving is real, and it is a fraction of what the price table suggests.

Modelled on the published tiers. The reference price is set per procedure and the calculation runs per act rather than on a single total, so real cases vary. Apply for a förhandsbesked and you will be told the exact figure before you commit.

Where travel cost flips the ranking

Subsidies are one half. The other is that travel is a flat cost while the per-tooth discount multiplies, so the cheapest destination for one implant is not the cheapest for six.

Total cost, including travel. Each line is treatment plus two return flights and nine nights — an implant needs a second visit months later, so that cost is unavoidable. Because travel is a flat cost, the lines start close together and fan out: on one tooth the destinations are within a few hundred pounds of each other, and by six the gap is measured in thousands.

Four things that forfeit the money

  1. Treating first, asking afterwards. Germany requires the Heil- und Kostenplan to be approved before treatment begins, and this applies to EU treatment too. Approval is never granted retrospectively. Sweden's förhandsbesked and France's entente préalable work the same way.
  2. An invoice without itemisation. Försäkringskassan wants a specified price and date for every act. A single total is refused. Ask the clinic at booking, not after.
  3. An unverified practitioner. Norway requires the treating dentist to hold public authorisation, and specialist accreditation where the treatment demands it. Ask for written confirmation by email before you travel.
  4. Assuming your diagnosis qualifies. Helfo pays on fifteen defined conditions. A clinic will not complete the paperwork simply because you ask — a dentist must set a diagnosis that actually matches one.
